9/18/2013 – Our Language Arts/Literature class has completed the reading of  “Monster” by Walter Dean Myers. I have decided to bring the novel to life. Here is a handout that I will be giving the students in order to give them a visual as well as audio directions [here].  The students will be introduced to the task of reenacting the trial based on the book. Students will be selected to volunteer for their roles in the recreating the trial based on the book. There will be a voting process as well as stump speeches for final selection to keep things fair and balanced. Once character roles are selected, the class will be given an allotted amount of time to discover what their role entails. After that individual time, students will be split into teams of Defense, Prosecution, and Jury to brainstorm for ideas and strategies for the pending trial. I must admit, I am far from theatrical, and I do not pretend to be dramatic on purpose. That being said, I think this will be a good opportunity for the students to put their own spin on a book they thoroughly enjoyed! They are also in the process of completing a 5 Question Essay Assignment [see here].

*update -9/19/2013: The students have earned their roles via stump speeches and our voting process. The prosecution and defense attorneys are now brainstorming their ideas. I have given them 5 duties/responsibilities in order to lead their team to victory.

*update – 9/20/2013: Students were finally put in teams, Defense Attorney with their witnesses (Steve Harmon, Steve’s Mother and Father, Jerry Harmon, and Mr. Sawicki) vs. Prosecution with their witnesses (Richard “Bobo” Evans, James King, Osvaldo Cruz, and Detective Williams). Students were given verbal instructions as to how Tuesday’s court proceedings would go. I also let them watch snippets from year’s past reenactments to give them a visual as to how they will be participating. Some were ready to instruct/lead their teams and others were a bit nervous.

*update – 9/23/2013: Students received preparation time to get their teams in order. Class went through a walk through to give them a better feel for how things will go tomorrow. I let the students know we would be filming for our own viewing purposes. I also let them know that it was okay to invite parents if they would like to have an audience.

*update – 9/24/2013: It’s SHOWTIME! The kids had a blast. I wish I could show you the video from the reenactment video, however, due to privacy issues, I cannot.
*In case your computer doesn’t have java script to view the slide show at the top, here are some pictures for your viewing pleasure…
